Maths and engineering conference at University of Kent June 2025
Year 12 mathematicians had an excellent and stimulating day at the University of Kent full of interesting lectures and workshops. Renuga and Tammy reported on the day:
"We went to the University of Kent for maths and engineering trip, where those who were interested in pursuing a future in that field got to experience university-style teaching in lecture rooms. We were first greeted by the staff members and then attended our first lecture led by a teacher who introduced to us the proof by induction. I really liked the way he linked a normal thing with maths, which made it easier to understand.
We attended other lectures including cryptography, solitons and tsunamis and the role of an actuary. It was a great opportunity to all of us as it allowed us to have a deeper understanding in mathematics and explore future careers. My favourite part of the day was when the lecturer explained to us how “x”, which we use on a regular basis in maths, came from the Arabic word (shay)."
