In Memoriam
It is with great sadness that the school has learned of the untimely passing of former teacher, David Burney.
A graduate of the University of Warwick, Dave began his teaching career in private education, before moving into the state sector. In the 1990s, he moved from Dane Court to Chatham House, leading the economics and business studies department. During his tenure, his results in the vocational subjects were recognised as the best in the country, and the classes he taught grew, reflecting on this success and the popularity of his teaching in general.
Outside of the classroom, he was an active man too, being an avid player of hockey. He volunteered for organisations such as the Samaritans, and was keen to be a source of support for those who needed it.
After many years at CCGS, Dave retired in 2016 - having bounced back from an earlier health scare. However, he was not done with teaching yet, and after a few years, when another teacher had to leave suddenly, Dave stepped into the breach, ensuring that no students were compromised in their economics studies. He therefore was teaching with us until only a few years ago.
His daughter and son both came through the school whilst he taught here, and it was always plain that his family were what mattered most to him. Having become a grandfather, he was enjoying retirement among his friends, wife, children and grandchildren. Former students and colleagues have all remarked on his affability, kindness and seemingly perpetual smile. He enriched many lives in his time with us, and we send our deepest sympathy to his loved ones at this time.
