Students have the theatre bug!

23 Feb 24

On Wednesday 21 February Drama students and members of the HOUSELIGHTS ensemble we to see Metamorphosis at the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith.

The play tells the story of Gregor Samsa, a young man who works hard to provide for his family but eventually breaks down and transforms into a giant insect. The play is based on a short story which was originally written by Franz Kafka and which looked at his own relationship with his estranged family.

Mr Smith said "It is a story which still resonates today. It is a particularly apt play for teenagers who are, to some extent, going through their own metamorphosis into adulthood and who are often reassessing their relationships with not only their friends and family but often themselves as well.

"This particular adaptation has been written by Lemn Sissay and developed in collaboration with Frantic Assembly who are one of the key practitioners we focus on at A Level. The show itself will be the starting point for our Y12 students' devised coursework piece and our new HOUSELIGHTS production, JAB, has also been created in the Frantic style.

"This is the 8th production we  have been to see since the theatres re-opened post COVID-19. We have taken somewhere in the region of 400 students during this period and once again our students have behaved impeccably. Taking 53 teenagers to London should be a daunting prospect but they make these days both memorable and rewarding. Long may this trend continue. We are already making plans for our theatre visits next year.

"Finally, on a personal note, I'd like to thank Mrs Cackett, Mrs Cross and Mrs Douglas for their help and support on this visit. Without staff generously giving up their evenings these visits wouldn't be able to run."

This was the third theatre visit run by the Drama Department this academic year following 2:22 A Ghost Story at the Marlowe in September and Things I Know To Be True at the Gulbenkian in November. Tickets for the HOUSELIGHTS production JAB, which runs from the 5-8 March, can be purchased online: www.ticketsource.co.uk/houselights
