Activities Week 2014

Years 7 and 8 visited the Regent's Park Open Air Theatre in London for a picnic and to see a fun, interactive performance of 'Twelfth Night' which was re-imagined for young people.

London Theatre

Year 12 visited London in July 2014 for a two day trip in which they experienced some of the best stage performances on offer in the UK. They had the opportunity to see 'The Crucible' at The Old Vic and Lucy Bailey's infamous revival of Shakespeare's 'Titus Andronicus,' at The Globe, a brutal, shocking, unrelenting cycle of revenge and violence.

Year 13 enjoy the annual trip to Stratford-Upon-Avon as they have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the Shakespeare experience. After exploring Shakespeare’s home town and birthplace they attend lectures on their ‘A’ Level Set Texts at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust and participate in theatre workshops with the RSC.  We also go to see a theatre performance in the evening.

The Lake District

In the summer, we are hoping to run a study trip to The Lake District, home of the Romantics where yr12 will learn about the landscape that inspired the poetry they will be studying at A2. They will tour the lakes, visit the Wordsworth Trust and attend workshops to gain a deeper knowledge of their chosen texts.

In 2011 Year 12 had the opportunity to spend a week in Italy on a cultural and Classical Civilisation trip which explored Ancient and Renaissance Rome. Students visited the key sites of the Colosseum, the Forum, the catacombs, the Pantheon and there was a trip to Ostia.  We also visited the Vatican, the Capitoline Museum and the Renaissance squares with their fountains and churches.  A return visit to the Trevi Fountain at night was popular.

At KS3 we have an annual trip to The Globe theatre where students experience a performance as ‘groundlings’. They get the opportunity to visit the museum and have a guided tour of the theatre.

Theatre trips are offered at all key stages throughout the year. Recently we have been to see The Tempest, Much Ado about Nothing, The Duchess of Malfi, Educating Rita, Macbeth and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time.

We also have theatre groups who come to perform at the school providing interactive experiences for students, this year Yr 7 enjoyed 'An Introduction to Shakespeare', Yr 8 saw 'Romeo and Juliet' and Yr9 watched 'Macbeth.' Year 8 also watched pocket 'The Merchant of Venice' by Propellor, an all male theatre group at The Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury.

Guardian Newsroom

Our Media and English students regularly visit The Guardian newsroom where they experience the real life processes of news production. They have an opportunity to create and edit news of the day and are taught skills of journalism and news writing.

Globe Theatre

A level English Literature students enjoyed two days in the capital, taking in the sights and seeing two fantastic plays.  Wednesday evening they were groundlings at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre to see Measure For Measure and a Thursday matinee in Regents park for Lord of the Flies.

Everyone agreed it was a fantastic experience & they can't wait to repeat it!
